Things were certainly on the up as we fought our way out of dehli traffic, our guide Ravi stopped for tea at his uncles house on route, and wanting to see some real india we obliged gladly. It was very humbling, two families in one small room to sleep and live and one to cook and eat. It was no bigger than 10 foot squared, with the beds in the corner and all the two families sharing. For them it was a good area, for us it felt like absolute squalor. Politely refusing tea we were quickly on the way out of the dense cloud of smog that was dehli.
Lots of memorable sites on route both good and bad, lots of wild life, dangerously high stacked motorbikes, families on mopeds (4 on a moped) and guy who wopped a spitting cobra out of his bag and started playing with it, I offered a small tip, he wanted a £1 for taking a picture, he got a short shrift and nothing, much to the amusement of his fellow street entrepreneur.
After our first encounter of an indian hotel we were concerned over what we would see on arrival at Hotel Heritage Mandawa: our first hotel on the tour. Thankfully there was no need: it has beautiful high ceilings, proper showers and a delightful evening meal. We are sat in an open aired court yard by a log fire with ornately painted walls and pillars. We had a delicious indian dinner all for £4 each! From porpers to kings… happy and content. Bikaner tomorrow for new year…..
