Delhi Day 1: long flight, foggy landing, the worlds craziest taxi ride, hot curry and “I think you have the wrong hotel”
Well…We have to say it was a bit of a culture shock! Lots of people warned us about what Delhi was like but it’s very hard to imagine something “you cannot imagine”!
It is a very dirty place, everything is covered in dirt and grime and there are people everywhere! Sprawling and busy dehli would be better described as infested. Cities can be polluted but we weren’t expecting the thick layer of carbon mist that clouded the city, we went for new experiences and we have never seen anything like it.
Then we had an interesting taxi ride to the hotel, the roads are chaos, bumper to bumper swerving in and out, no consideration for other driver/road users/ pedestrians. You kinda get accustomed to the near misses and horn blowing!
After a long flight we arrived at our hotel (which has an identity crisis with 2 different names!) It took us most of the day to muster up the courage to try putting the adaptor and charger into the wall…needless to say that is done now and we survived the experience…the light switches are another matter though – there is nothing wrong with sleeping with the light on though is there? The bathroom is very interesting, we have fixed the cistern that wasn’t flushing and if we get bored then we can always build a sandcastle with the silt that is on the bathroom floor!
Delhi is…chaos cars and people everywhere its all very dirty and dusty…we have decided to use a driver and hotel package for the next two weeks to tour around the northern sights of India and get us on the overnight train down to Goa…otherwise there is no way of getting out of the city (all trains are full until 4th January at the earliest and it would cost us a 3rd of the price of the 2 weeks to get to Agra by car) this means that we will be doing the northern route in an anticlockwise direction ending, not starting, as originally planned, in Agra.
